PIMS - PRODUCTION SCHEDULING

PIMS' fully integrated Production Scheduling Module helps the mill manager improve mill operating efficiency.  PIMS contributes to both higher worker productivity and greater customer satisfaction by taking full advantage of advanced system integration as well as the speed, accuracy and flexibility of a modern software system.  Modules generally associated with Production Scheduling are:  Block Scheduling and Run Scheduling

Block Scheduling

Block schedules may be set up in PIMS by paper class or grade with associated tonnage.  PIMS calculates the dates and duration of each block.  The blocks can be shifted and the tons adjusted to respond to customer demand when there is insufficient allocation for the order quantity or delivery date being slotted.

The computer allocates sales orders to individual blocks according to grade, desired due date, transit times and required tonnage.  Blocks can be adjusted to accommodate demand within order entry (by those authorized) or as part of the regular block maintenance function.

When there is insufficient room in the schedule for the order being slotted, PIMS notifies the scheduling staff.  Order commitments affected by changes to the block schedule are reported for rescheduling.  The following is a partial list of reports supporting the Scheduling Staff:

Backlog Reporting
- indicates open tonnage to be produced by grade and class, summarizing tons and number of production days.  This is available in both graphical and printed report format.

Unallocated Orders Report - itemizes orders with tonnage not assigned to the block schedule.

Orders Allocated by Block Schedule - lists open blocks at each mill, indicating grade, planned date span, tons, orders, customers assigned and their order requirements.

Delayed Delivery Report - displays orders with due dates trailing the start date of the block to which they are allocated.  This generally occurs when blocks are shifted or expanded to accommodate new orders.

Order Receipts Analysis – graphically shows the total orders in tons received by month, with current v. prior year comparisons.  Grade breakdown by month is also indicated in pie chart form.

Order Edit - recaps the order information for review by Sales Service.

Trimming Report – indicates order items not yet scheduled.  They are grouped by grade, size and due-date for ease of planning.

Open Orders Report - lists open orders scheduled for delivery up to a designated delivery date, by size, the tons open, original order amounts, scheduled, produced and shipped quantities, all organized by grade.

Trim Scheduling

PIMS Trim Scheduling is fully integrated with Block Scheduling.  Trim schedules are prepared by grade and diameter and assigned to a block.  PIMS ensures that the trim coincides with the order requirements, and meets the deckle limits for the machine as well.  Warnings are flagged if order sizes are being over-trimmed.  Block Scheduling differentiates trimmed and untrimmed tonnage.

Trim schedules are prioritized and added to the production run schedule by Production Planning.  Trim efficiencies are reported with scheduled-to-actual and trimmed-to-sold comparisons.

Key management operations information is available on-line for viewing as well as in printed form.  Key items are as follows:

1. The Trim Schedule - displays/reports sets and tons scheduled and produced, for each width, customer and order combination.

2.The Production Run Schedule  displaying or listing the trim schedules in production, highlighting grades and grade changes, maximum width, remaining sets and tons, diameters and projected production dates.

Trims are displayed in the priority sequence set by production planning, with the active trim underscored.

                                                                        Run Scheduling

PIMS' Run Scheduling module is an important contributor in controlling production priorities.  This key module automatically organizes Production into truck or rail loads for shipment staging and traffic coordination.  In conjunction with the integrated Warehouse Management module, Run Scheduling determines the specific staging of activity in the warehouse.
